What they mean together
Death closes a chapter and The Fool walks out through the door it leaves open. The ending has already come or is very close, and what follows is starting from scratch without looking back.
In love
A relationship ends and makes room for something very different. If you're together, it's time to reinvent the way you love each other.
Career and money
Leaving a job to try something new. It's scary, but the change is already underway.
An example
Suppose you ask what to do about a job that no longer fulfills you, and Death and The Fool appear. Inside, that chapter has already closed, even if you still show up every morning. The Fool adds that whatever comes next doesn't have to look like what came before, and it's fine not to know yet what it will be. Nobody is telling you to quit tomorrow with no safety net. The point is to stop dragging out something that's over and start moving toward something else.
By position in the spread
In the past
You went through a major ending that forced you to reinvent yourself. A lot of who you are today comes from that goodbye and the leap you took afterward.
In the present
You're right on the threshold, with one thing ending and another starting to show. Feeling dizzy is normal, but staying stuck in the middle costs more than moving forward.
In the future
Once a chapter closes, a change of direction will follow. What's coming will be very different from what you know, so it's better to travel light.
If they come up reversed
With Death reversed, the ending resists. Letting go is hard and the change drags on longer than it should. If The Fool is reversed, the risk is running ahead without properly closing what came before. With both upside down there's stagnation and fear of moving, and the work is accepting what's already gone.
Let go of what's finished and travel light toward what's next.
Frequently asked questions
Is Death and The Fool a bad sign?
Not necessarily. Death refers to change, not anything literal, and next to The Fool it usually means an ending that opens the door to a new life.
Does The Fool and Death mean a breakup?
It can be the end of a relationship or of one way of being in it. If you stay together, what ends is a phase, and what begins depends on both of you wanting to reinvent things.
To read them separately, here is the meaning of The Fool and of Death. And if they came up in a three card spread, look at the position each one landed in too.
