Four of Swords
rest, retreat, recovery
A figure lies still in a quiet place, with swords hanging on the wall. This is the pause you need, a chance to recharge and step back from the noise for a while. Resting counts as moving forward too.
The image and its symbolism
Inside a church, the effigy of a knight lies on a tomb with his hands together as if in prayer. Three swords hang on the wall pointing down, and a fourth rests horizontally along the tomb. Above is a stained-glass window. Everything is silent. The stored swords are battles on hold, the knight is resting, and the window lets light in even in the stillness.
What Four of Swords means
Upright, the Four of Swords tells you to stop. It comes up when one problem keeps following another, or when you need a few days to yourself before deciding anything. Think of it as recharging, which is a long way from giving up.
It's also about stepping away from the noise so you can think. A weekend away, or saying no to a few plans, might be exactly what you need. When you come back, you'll see things with fresh eyes.
Four of Swords in love
A truce in the relationship, or a few days alone to work out what you need. You don't have to sort it all out this week.
If you're in a relationship
You two could use a breather and a little less intensity. A calm truce can fix more than any argument.
If you're single
A quiet season to get to know yourself better. Whatever comes next will find you more whole.
If you're thinking about an ex
Let the story settle. Don't text and don't decide anything for now. Get your calm back first.
At work
Time off, slowing down, or planning without pressure. Your mind works better when you let it rest.
A vacation, a quieter period, or the need to slow down so you don't burn out. It's also good for planning, studying or preparing a project without pressure.
Money
Better not to move large amounts right now. Keep what you have stable and go over your accounts before any big purchase.
Health and well-being
One of the best cards for rest. You need to stop. Sleep well, slow down and recover without guilt.

Four of Swords reversed
Built-up exhaustion, or the itch to get moving again after a good rest.
Reversed, the Four of Swords can mean exhaustion that's piled up because you haven't let yourself stop, or the opposite, wanting to get back into action after a good rest. In love it can point to distance that's gone on too long, or a sign it's time to get back in touch. At work, returning to a project with fresh strength, or a pace you can't keep up anymore.
